This 150 acre undeveloped site, is located on the western half of the
southern shore of Lake Dias, west of State Road 11. In addition,
there is a fifth parcel that belongs to another member of the Strawn
family. The family is currently working on a transaction to include
this parcel as part of this project. The site is accessible from
Lake Dias Cemetery Road, an unpaved, prescriptive right-of-way,
street maintained by the County.
The property contains several different types of habitats including
scrub, xeric hammock, orange grove, fallow grove and floodplain
forest along the Lake Dias shoreline. The sand pine scrub habitat
comprises the majority of the property. The xeric hammock habitat
runs upslope from the shoreline and grades into the scrub habitat.
This habitat contains a dominant live oak canopy with scattered
slash pine throughout. The floodplain forest habitat is along the
littoral zone of Lake Dias.
This property also contains an orange grove and a fallow grove. The
fallow grove was historically active. However, the orange trees have
since been removed. This area now contains a mix of bahia grass and
weedy herbaceous species.
Potential acquisition partners include the St. Johns River Water
Management District (SJRWMD) and the State of Florida. This site is
located within the Florida Forever project area designated as the
“Longleaf Pine Ecosystem.” The State has categorized this as a Group
B / Full Fee project. Group B projects are defined as “those
acquisition projects that are important, but not of the highest
priority.” |
