This 17 acre site is located on
the southern shore of Spruce Creek, west of Interstate 95. The site
is within the municipality of Port Orange. Existing improvements on
the site include a single-family residence, barn and other ancillary
structures. Public access to this property is limited. Access to the
site for vehicles, cyclists and others is gained through the
adjoining “Sanctuary on Spruce Creek” residential development. The
streets within this gated neighborhood are private.
The property contains habitats including xeric hammock, upland mixed
forest and floodplain swamp along Spruce Creek. The majority of the
habitat is xeric hammock that historically was a scrub community.
Xeric hammock is an advanced successional stage of scrub or sandhill.
An upland mixed forest was present along the slope between the xeric
hammock and floodplain forest. The floodplain swamp habitat is along
the bank of Spruce Creek.
The City of Port Orange is the lead agency in this project and will
assume management responsibilities once the property is acquired. It
is their intent to open it as a park and connect it to the Gamble
House property.
Funding for the acquisition of this property will come from Florida
Communities Trust (50%), the City of Port Orange (25%), and Volusia
Forever (25%). The Trust for Public Land assisted in this project by
putting the property under contract until the funding partners could
be established. |
