This
natural site, which consists of one main parcel and sixty-six (66)
small lot parcels, is located north of SR 44 just east of the St.
Johns River. The western boundary of the large parcel abuts the St.
Johns River, while the eastern boundary is the terminus of the Zeigler
Dead River. This parcel is approximately 325 acres in size. A
commercial marina and the County’s Ed Stone Park are located in the
area between the property and SR 44. A partially developed residential
area is situated to the east of the property. The
only habitat on this property is floodplain swamp. Bald cypress and
blackgum dominate this area. Minor amounts of red maple, sweetgum and
wax myrtle are also present. Groundcover is sparse but includes
lizard’s tail and royal fern. A very diverse assemblage of animals is
associated with floodplain swamps. These include southern toad,
cricket frog, gray treefrog, pig frog, Southern leopard frog,
alligator, river cooter, stinkpot, mud snake, redbelly water snake,
brown water snake, cottonmouth, yellow-crowned night heron, wood duck,
pileated woodpecker, various warblers, golden mouse, black bear,
raccoon, and bobcat. |
