This 32+/- acre property, is an
irregular-shaped, undeveloped site located on the north side of SR
44 (Canal Street) at the junction of Jungle Road, adjacent to New
Smyrna Beach. The property to the west of this site is undeveloped,
while the properties along the east side of Jungle Road consist of
single family residences. The western boundary is adjacent to the
Huntington Trust property. SR 44, the southern boundary, is a highly
developed major arterial road leading into New Smyrna Beach.
Two (2) major habitat types, hydric hammock and upland mixed forest,
are found on this property. A mixture of hardwoods, such as live
oak, red maple, sweetgum, magnolia, wax myrtle and Florida elm,
dominates both the bottomland forest and the hydric hammock.
Historically, this site was probably wetter, but the hydrology may
have been altered by the past construction of drainage canals.
The property does not abut any existing conservation lands. However,
several studies conducted by Volusia County Public Works on the
effects of stormwater issues, more particularly flooding, related to
the Turnbull Creek Basin indicate that purchasing lands in this
basin is one of several options for addressing these issues. |
