170+/- acres
located on Fort Florida Road in DeBary, with the western and southern
boundaries of the property on the St. Johns River. The property
presently supports an agricultural activity, the grazing of cattle.
Historically, this property likely consisted of flood plain swamp or
marsh, pine flatwoods and bottomland forests. The flood plain was
diked and partially filled during the dredging of the inter-coastal
waterway. This area is still considered to be wetlands and the 10,000’
dike is breached in a few locations. The remaining areas have been
converted to pasture. Large live and laurel oaks are scattered within
the flood plain and pasture. A small blackwater creek flows through
the northern portion of the property and discharges into the St. Johns
River. A portion of the property may lie within the State’s Wekiva
River Aquatic Preserve.
This tract of land was once part of 6,000+ acres
that comprised the DeBary family estate in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries. The property is located in a zone of high
probability for archeological site occurrence, due to its immediate
proximity to the St. Johns River, a water body of high resource value
to prehistoric and historic peoples. Two documented archeological
sites may be located on the property - “Thrasher’s Shell Pit” and
“Goodacres Midden”. |
