This
1,212 +/- acre site, which is predominantly rectangular in shape and
runs on an east/west axis, is undeveloped with the exception of some
cattle feeding and containment structures. The property is located
in DeLeon Springs. The eastern boundary is Lake Winona Road and the
northern boundary is the Heart Island Conservation Area.
Sandhill, xeric hammock and floodplain swamp are the dominant
habitats found on this property. Also included in the matrix are
sandhill upland lakes and pasture. Portions of the property are
currently used for citrus production and raising cattle. The citrus
grove is located along Lake Winona Road and there are several
pastures in the central part of the property for the cattle. The
remainder of the site is natural. There are approximately 588 acres
(49%) of uplands and 624 acres (51%) of wetlands.
The property abuts the Heart Island Conservation Area to the north,
a 12,000+ acre site owned by the St. Johns River Water Management
District. This property was impacted by the wildfires of 1998 and is
currently undergoing restoration through the planting of long leaf
pine to restore the area’s native plant communities. Acquisition of
the property would increase the size of this conservation area. |
